I started painting over thirty years ago. At that time I was working for the British Steel Corporation (BSC). During the national strike I painted a group of my fellow workmates on the picket line. The painting was hung in the Sheffield National Open Art Exhibition at the Graves Art Gallery and was photographed for the Sheffield Telegraph as “Picasso of the picket line”. I was commissioned to depict the manufacture of cold rolled strip at Brinsworth Strip Mills. Another commission came from the Iron and Steel Trades Confederation as a gift to a long serving union official.
I studied for a Fine Art Degree at Sheffield Polytechnic. One of my final degree paintings was selected but unfortunately not hung in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London.
After 25 years at BSC I took voluntary redundancy, then spent a year full time studying. My last 7 years before retiring were spent at Dinnington Comprehensive School as their Learning Mentor.
As a member of the North East Derbyshire Ramblers Association I was asked to illustrate their guide to The Chesterfield Round Walk. Last year the first 6,000 copies were printed. I have donated paintings to the Rotherham District General Hospital, Royal Hallamshire Hospital and Bluebell Wood Hospice.
Since retiring I have had much more time to develop my own artistic skills and have been a member of Heeley for two years.
